Prepare for Onsite Equipment Training

A planning checklist for employers arranging private operator training at their facilities.

Reviewed October 29, 2026 · By ARC Solutions

1. Identify the equipment

Send ARC the equipment types, makes, models and attachments participants use. Include available operator manuals and describe the work performed. Forklifts, powered pallet jacks, lifts and telehandlers can require different instruction and evaluation arrangements.

2. Confirm the participants

Provide names, job roles, experience levels and previous training information. Discuss language needs or accommodations in advance. Separate new operators from experienced operators requesting refresher training or competency evaluations when planning the session.

3. Prepare equipment and the site

  • Make the agreed equipment available with manuals, keys and adequate charge or fuel.

  • Resolve serviceability concerns before practical activities.

  • Arrange a suitable classroom space and a controlled area for hands-on instruction.

  • Coordinate pedestrian and vehicle traffic with the facility contact.

  • Share site hazards, operating conditions and relevant workplace procedures.

4. Allow time for individual evaluation

Plan the schedule around the equipment, group size and participants’ experience. Allow time for classroom instruction, pre-operation inspections, practical exercises and individual operator evaluations. Attendance alone does not demonstrate operating competency.

5. Agree on documentation

Confirm the participant information, equipment details and training records needed by your organization. ARC provides training and evaluation documentation for the agreed scope. Employers remain responsible for workplace-specific requirements and authorization to operate.

Powered industrial truck training

OSHA’s powered industrial truck requirements include formal instruction, practical training and evaluation of operator performance. A general safety awareness class does not replace these elements. Requirements differ by equipment and work setting.
